Need backyard landscaping suggestions

Hi All,

Planning to do backyard for my house and looking for some suggestions, The lot is an East facing one and we are planning to extend the Alfresco as shown in the poor rough sketch i have attached and also planning to include a fire pit with some seat there as well. 

I am planning to have veggie garden on the black mulched area and was thinking of hedging the lawn zone so the veggie garden is not evidently visible.Also planning to have fruit tress around the fence border. My plans were have a white picket fence and Bougainville around the fence with a central arbor and Wisteria plant on it with a small pond or some showpiece visible from Alfresco exactly behind the fire pot i have in the images. 

I am not sure of the fencing or hedging as is not a very big area and would i get the landscaping look i think of. I am a newbie and this is my first backyard makeover so looking for suggestions on how do i plan for veggie garden and make it have a designer look hopefully.

Also suggestions on if i need to consider when planting as my house is East Facing so how  about Sunlight in the garden would it be maximum on North West?

I think your plan sounds great, and sketching it out is an important step in the planning process. You may want to make another sketch with the focus on your backyard. Add some dimensions to show scale and add in your ideas, such as the veggie garden, fruit trees, fencing, arbour and hedging. You can then play with the layout and see what you think works.

For hedging and screening, you can create a subtle separation between the lawn and veggie garden with a low, formal hedge. Options like Buxus, Lilly Pilly, or Viburnum provide a neat and structured look without making the space feel too enclosed. 

Your idea of a white picket fence with Bougainvillea sounds stunning but may require regular pruning. If you want a lower-maintenance alternative with a similar lush effect, consider Star Jasmine or Hardenbergia, which are easier to train along the fence. 

The arbour with Wisteria is a beautiful focal point, but ensure it has strong support, as Wisteria can become quite heavy over time.

The location of your veggie garden sounds great. Since your house is east-facing, your backyard will receive the most sunlight in the northwest and western sections during the afternoon. This makes it ideal for positioning your veggie garden, as most vegetables require at least six hours of direct sunlight daily.

I think you have a great start to your plan, and I'm excited to see what you come up with.

I really like your ideas and sketch! Sketches really make it easier to picture in your mind. @JacobZ  lists most of the things I would suggest but here area few extra.

- With that second sketch with dimensions, scale in the future width of the trees you want. (I have liquid amber trees that arnt wide and I choose them because of their growth radius). Factor in the trees that will take ALL the water that fits under their branches so oher plants may not grow well with them.

- Where your shed is and the white picket fence will be plus entrance. Think of the path that we humans will take. Usually it will be the easiest to do so maybe shift the shed or the gate in the fence or hedge so it lines up with the path or stepping stones?

Last one

- Mmm was distracte dby work stuff lol andnow its gone from me 😕 However another one is with the boganvilla and the Jasmine, what @JacobZ has said about weight of the plants when grown, double it in your head. Ive had to prune regulary my grandmas boganvillia and Jasmine (less so) but they were prolific growers.

I thought I'd add you might like to use the myGarden planner. It's essentially used to plan out irrigation systems, but I've found it quite helpful for visualising backyard layouts.
