I replaced a recycled water garden tap, but have I used the wrong product?

I replaced a recycled water garden tap, but have I used the wrong product?

Background: Recently I noticed the recycled water tap in our front yard started to leak at the top of the tap and hose end, plus the turn valve had seized to boot. There was no indication on the old tap that would indicate that I could pull apart the tap to fix/replace the internals (o-ring, tap valve), so I concluded the whole tap needed to be replaced.

I purchased and installed this, thinking this would be my best option: https://www.bunnings.com.au/fix-a-tap-19mm-3-4-recycled-water-tap_p4760028. While I successfully installed the tap and there's no leaks (yay), my problem starts with what the heck I do now with a barbed hose connector. I assumed the Fix-a-Tap product I purchased would allow me to remove the barb adaptor, but the thing would not budge when I tried to remove it prior to installation, even with an adjustable wrench.

Questions:

  • Is there an adaptor for the barb hose end that converts it to a universal tap (i.e. a typical garden tap)?
  • Should I try remove the pre-installed barb hose end adaptor again while the tap itself is now installed? My concern is causing damage to the plumbing pipe if too much force is used to try remove it, though I may not have had enough leverage originally. (Could I ask the manufacturer to confirm the removability?)
  • Could I purchase and install a normal brass garden tap (+ make sure purple/lilac-coloured adaptors/connections are used to indicate the use of recycled water)? (cut my losses)

Thanks in advance!

Hello @Sambam

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your recycled water tap.

The fitting at the end of your tap is used for push to fit purple drip irrigation hose. It might be possible to unscrew the fitting, but you'll need to remove it from the wall and mount it on a table vise so that you can properly unscrew the fitting with a wrench. There are fittings that will fit the mouth of the tap such as the Nylex Recycled Water 12mm Hose Connector Set. This is designed for use with the irrigation tap.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
