How to set up irrigation for front garden bed and lawn?

I want to setup an automated irrigation system for the front lawn and garden bed including the roses.

Need assistance with where to place sprinklers and how many.

This will guide me on where to dig the trenches.

I have already purchased the Orbit B-Hyve timer with a wifi hub (pic attached).

This has two outlets for two zones.

There a slope from the house to the street level as shown in the pic.
There is a one tap on the outside behind the japanese maple tree on the garden bed near the bins.

The flow rate derived using a 9.3 litre bucket method is approx 23 (20 secs to fill the bucket).

the width of the lawn is 14 meters and the depth from the garden bed to the street is 9 meters.

the garden bed depth is 2.6 meters and the width is 9 meters (including the garden bed, the roses and the stairs).

Re: How to set up irrigation for front garden bed and lawn?

Hi @MSD

Thanks for sharing your question about setting up an irrigation system for your lawn and garden bed. For your lawn, I definitely recommend using a pop-up sprinkler set to get maximum coverage. I suggest having a look at the Holman DIY Irrigation Planning System. It gives an excellent explanation of what you need to take into consideration when planning a pop-up sprinkler system.

But for your garden area, I suggest using a drip irrigation system, it will apply the water slowly, it gives your plants a chance to absorb the water instead of drowning in it. It's very efficient and only applies water in accordance with the system that you've put in place. I suggest having a look at having a look at this guide - How to install a drip irrigation watering system by @Adam_W. This guide provides excellent tips and techniques on how to set up an effective drip irrigation system.

I also highly recommend looking at the Pope irrigation website to familiarise yourself with the types of drippers/sprayers and weeping hoses. It's important to understand the various methods of irrigating. They have some fantastic D.I.Y guides and a self-guided selection process for all your components.

I also recommend having a look at these discussions for more ideas:

In regards to your own set-up, I suggest looking at the different pop-up sprinkler sets as they all come different performance features. Some will spray further than others, other units can be manually adjusted, but the general layout and positioning is quite the same. I've placed a sample image below to give you a better idea of how the pop-up sprinklers are set up. I suggest drawing it on paper first so that you'll get a better idea of pipe layout and where the sprinklers should be positioned.

Once you've drawn up your plan, please share it with the community along with any questions you might have about your plan. We'll be more than happy to provide recommendations.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
