How to recover lawn?

I need to recover areas of grass that have died in my yard. What are the quickest and most effective options for reviving it?

Re: Quick Recovery Solutions for Dead Grass Patches

Hey there @davidc12

If the lawn is compact and it is not allowing water to soak in, I would aerate it with a garden fork, this will allow for water and fertiliser to penetrate down to the roots.
Rake over a layer of Top Soil for lawns. Add a Wetting agent and some lawn fertiliser as well. I can’t say it’s cost effective upfront BUT long term definitely. With regular maintenance to your lawn it will look healthier and have a better growth habit. This is just my opinion though, I’m in Perth and with our hydrophobic lifeless sands we need to regularly add a wetting agent to help hold onto moisture. Would be interested to know what State you live in as soil conditions would be different and another Community member can give you great advice for your area. Good luck and I hope your lawn recovers quickly !!! 🌿😀

Re: Quick Recovery Solutions for Dead Grass Patches

Hi @davidc12,

It's great to see that @mich1972 has already provided some helpful suggestions. Her advice on aerating and using topsoil, wetting agents, and fertiliser is spot-on, especially for addressing compacted soil and encouraging healthier growth.

Adding to her suggestions, you might want to check the lawn type and consider reseeding or laying turf in the bare patches for faster coverage. Choosing a grass variety that matches your existing lawn and climate will help ensure a more seamless look. Also, if the dead patches are in high-traffic areas, try placing stepping stones or mulch to reduce wear on the grass. Finally, regular watering (especially early in the morning) will encourage root growth and prevent moisture loss.

Here's a helpful guide: How to revive a lawn.

Please let us know if you have any questions.
