How to rebuild lawn?

How to rebuild lawn?

Hey all, Just wanting some advice on what should be done to help grow/care for a patch of my lawn. Wanting to grow grass over the soiled patches and try to keep the rest of the area green and healthy?

The weeds I'll get rid off, was looking at some lawn fertilizer products. Would Seeding products be better than the hose on applications for my area of lawn?

Thanks!

Re: How to rebuild lawn?

Hi @Andyyy,

Welcome to Bunnings Workshop. We're pleased to have you join the community.

Can you please tell us where you are based and whether those parts of the lawn that are in shade in your photos get much sun at all? It can obviously be very difficult growing grass in areas that don't get much sun, especially if they also get a lot of traffic.

My first impression is that your soil looks very compacted. I would suggest using a lawn aerator. Options include spiked rollers, pronged aerators and even sandals with spikes.

If you'd like to repair your lawn, you obviously have the choice of trying seed or re-laying turf. The guide How to repair a lawn can guide you through the process.

Re: How to rebuild lawn?

Hi @Jason

Unfortunately that part of the lawn doesn't get too much sun, probably max 1hour when the sun is setting(daylight savings now) probably abit more exposure to sunlight. The only foot traffic will be me, when it's time to do the gardening so, not much foot traffic at all

Thanks for the suggestion, ill try to get the soil less - compacted with one of the methods you have suggested.

I do want to repair the lawn, so I think ill try re-seeding and see how it goes. What products would you recommend to purchase for this job?

Thanks!

Re: How to rebuild lawn?

Hi @Andyyy,

I just wanted to confirm what Jason has mentioned. The first thing I see is that the lawn is very compacted. Aerate the whole lawn (even the bits with grass) thoroughly. Then, spread topsoil over it (including the grassed area) to a depth of around 10mm. Ensure on the grassed area that the blades are still sticking out above it. Water it in well.

You'll then be able to apply grass seed over the whole area. Here's a helpful step-by-step guide: How to over-seed a lawn.

I just want to point out that since it's a relatively small area, you should consider laying Buffalo turf. It's an instant fix and reasonably budget-friendly. It would save you at least a year's worth of trying to rejuvenate this lawn. If you did decide to go that work here's another guide: How to lay turf. Personally, I would be going the turf route if the budget allows.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
