To preserve tulip bulbs after they bloom so they’re ready for next year, start by allowing the leaves and stems to turn yellow and die back fully, which lets the bulb store energy for the following season. Once the foliage has completely dried out, typically a few weeks after blooming, gently dig up the bulbs, taking care not to damage them. Brush off any excess soil rather than washing them, as water can encourage mould growth.
Place the bulbs in a cool, dry, and shaded area to air-dry for about a week. After they’ve dried, inspect each bulb, discarding any that show signs of damage or rot. Store the healthy bulbs in a ventilated container, like a paper or mesh bag, with a layer of dry peat moss or sawdust to keep them dry. Keep them in a cool, dark place until replanting time in late autumn. This method of storage is especially helpful in warmer climates, as it mimics the cold winter dormancy tulips need, ensuring they bloom beautifully again next year.
