How to prepare a garden bed for planting?

Hi, our lawn is newly laid, approx 6 weeks now. We are wanting to plant some flowers/ vege etc and wanting to create a garden bed. We are thinking of buying the garden edging and fill it with correct soil/ fertiliser. I have added images of our garden and what we are trying to create. Can someone please advise step by step what we need to do and the soil/ fertiliser products that we should get from Bunnings? Thanks!

Re: How to prepare a garden bed for planting?

Hi @chandi_sril,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. We're pleased to have you join us.

I take it the first image is an inspirational shot of what you are trying to create, and the second is your garden today? Are you planning to have the new garden bed at ground level and sacrifice some of the new lawn?

We'll be certainly happy to help. Could you please reply and clarify? I expect the guide How to fill a raised garden bed will answer many of your questions about how to prepare the bed for planting.

Re: How to prepare a garden bed for planting?

Hi Jason, thanks for the response.

Yes, the first image is what we are trying to create and the second is our lawn after a mow. We don’t need it raised, just ground level using the existing lawn.
do we need to dig out the lawn first?
what type of soil/ fertiliser should I use to create the garden bed?
