Looks like I have been doing the wrong thing compressing the soil too much.
Yes, that's a logigical & easy mistake to make @AHoy
People often compress the soil with the aim of stabilising the young tree but ironically in the long term it has the opposite effect - the compressed soil is harder for new roots to establish in & it's the roots that provide real stability.
