Hi We are planning to lay turf on our small front side garden.
However the garden needs some levelling.
Which is the best way and product to do that.
Thanks
Hi @Harit
The cheapest way is to dig out the lumpy lawn bits and try dig up the area so the soil isnt compacted too much rake it all our removing rocks etc.
Shape the yards ground levels to suit your needs the process of digging will uncompact the soil.
Then lay the turf on top. but you must keep the water up to it twice a day tillt the the turf rolls take root into the ground.
If the grass is dryng out with out taking root easily put some organic soil ontop of the turf and wet it down so the dirt washes down helping the grass roots be under soil and giving them soil to grow into.
Or a better way is to level the area and then add 10mm layer of top dressing soil across the the old ground helping fill lumps and bumps at the new grass zone and lay the turf on that. I might boardcast a layer of top soil across the top to help bed the grass roots down.
And water twice a day at summer time. morning and night.
Later you can add a sand top dressing mix to aim for a bowling green flat lawn. if you wish.
Hi @Harit,
A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.
@Jewelleryrescue has already covered it, so I don't have much to add.
There are only two ways to level soil, remove it or add to it.
The cheaper but more labour-intensive of the two is to loosen and remove or redistribute the soil. You can use a Garden Fork to loosen the soil, then use a Landscape Rake to redistribute it.
The alternative is to add a layer of new soil over the top that will fill the low spots in the lawn to the level of the highest point. Top Soil, which can be ordered in bulk through the Special Orders desk at your local Bunnings is the way to go when adding material.
Check out How To Lay Turf for some guidance.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
