The Bunnings Workshop community can help with your home improvement projects.
Hello everyone,
My name is Tiffany and I truly hope I can get some insights and guidance from this community. I have just received the keys to my first ever house and I didn't realise how much work that needs to be done for the house to be actually complete.
Some might call me crazy but I truly wanted to attempt to install some artificial grass at my small backyard and the both sides of the house and perhaps adding little steps here and there.
I understand that we need to compact the sand but the current base is the yellow brickies sand (I hope I get this right) that comes with the lot & build. Picture for reference.
The queries are:
- what should go on top of the yellow sand?
- Should the yellow sand be compacted prior to adding infill sand?
- so does it go like: current yellow sand > infill sand > artificial grass ?
is this even possible for a couple with very little knowledge in landscaping to accomplish?
Thank you so much in advance.

Hello Jason,
Thank you for the warm welcome!
Yes I have definitely checked out the step-by-step guide but it doesn't provide information on the base that I queried because the current one is the yellow brickies sand and in most of step-by-step guidance they usually have different base - look like the base for dying grass and they just rip off the grass.
Just unsure what goes on top of the yellow sand, is it the white sand then? I hope what I said makes sense
Hello @Tiffany33
My apologies for the late reply. Your brickies sand is a bit of a conundrum. Allow me to make some inquiries if it can be used under artificial turf. Brickies sand has a component of clay in it that might not allow water to freely pass through. As soon as I have more information, I'll get back to you.
If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Hello @EricL Thank you so much for taking the time to find out more. I truly appreciate your kindness and helpš„ŗšššš
Hi @Tiffany33
Just a reminder that we are going through a long weekend, and I'll only be able to contact the specialist on Tuesday of next week.
Thank you for your patience.
Eric
Not a problem at all Ericš Hope you and the whole community have a lovely Easter.
Hello @Tiffany33
Thank you for your patience. If you do have brickies sand left over, I'm afraid it will need to removed and set aside. Brickies sand has a component of clay in it which prevents water from passing through. This can cause issues if you were to install your artificial turf on top of it. Just to be on the safe side it's best to start with just plain soil.
It's understandable that bits of the brickies sand will be left over, your goal is to remove as much of it as possible.
Here is a handy step-by-step guide: How to lay synthetic turf.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Thank you so much @EricL for getting back to me and looking into this. Yes we will try to remove as much as possible. Thanks againš
