How to improve soil and lawn in my yard

We currently moved into this property and we are looking for ways to improve the front lawn. It looks all.dried out, the soil is cacked with algae like look. Can you suggest ways of getting the grass to grow and improving the look of that place?

Re: How to improve soil and lawn in my yard

Hello @funmilad

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about improving the soil in your lawn.

Improving your front lawn can be a rewarding project, and it sounds like the soil will need some attention to create the right environment for healthy grass growth. From the description, the dried-out grass and cracked, algae-like soil suggest poor soil structure, compaction, and possibly drainage issues. The first step would be to aerate the soil, which you can do with a manual aerator or a garden fork from the store.

This will help loosen compacted areas, allowing water, air, and nutrients to penetrate the soil.

After aerating, consider applying a soil improver, such as Richgro Lawn Soil or a soil conditioner with organic matter, to replenish nutrients and improve the overall health of the soil. Spread it evenly across the lawn to create a healthier base for grass growth. If the algae-like layer is significant, gently rake it away before adding the soil improver. This will reduce competition for nutrients and ensure the grass can establish itself.

Once the soil is prepared, overseeding with a lawn seed mix suited to your area and conditions is a great next step. The store offers blends tailored to different climates and grass types, including options for shaded or sunny areas. Scatter the seed evenly, and top it with a thin layer of top dressing or lawn soil to help it settle. Regular watering is essential during this stage, so ensure the area remains moist but not waterlogged as the seeds germinate.

To maintain and enhance the lawn's growth, apply a slow-release fertiliser like Scotts Lawn Builder after the new grass begins to establish itself. This will provide the nutrients needed for sustained growth. Using a soil wetting agent, also available at the store, can help with water absorption, especially in areas where the soil tends to repel water.

With regular care, including proper mowing, watering, and occasional feeding, your front lawn should gradually improve in appearance and health. Taking the time to prepare the soil and provide consistent maintenance will go a long way toward creating a lush, inviting space.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
