How to get rid of bindies from the lawn?

My dogs get covered in these burrs, which then get into the house, they seem to be virtually impossible to get rid of. I recently planted some shrubs, which so far seem to be doing well, & was advised not to plant grass seeds until Spring - is this the right advice - I'm no gardener, just want the place to look less barren, & to get rid of these burrs.    missedout.

Feel free to share some photos @Imz93. That will help members identify your lawn type and the weeds you are dealing with. Please let me know if you have any trouble adding some photos to the discussion.

Re: How to get rid of burrs from the lawn?

Welcome @Imz93.

Some images would be really helpful. However, a product like Yates 250ml BuffaloPro Selective Bindii and Broadleaf Weed Killer Concentrate is a good catch-all for all grass types. It knocks off all common lawn weeds, including bindie.

As mentioned previously, by this time of the year, the bindie seed (thorns) have already been produced, and it's best to start spraying for them at the end of September or early October. This will kill the weed before it has time to set seed.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

So if I start to spray them now would it be affective? I really would love my son to be able to play outside this summer as Santa is bringing him lots of outdoor activities!

If treating grass isn't going to make a difference at this time of year I might look into getting some rolls of fake turf from bunning to lay down over an area for my son to be able to be outside I've just posted a thread with my question and some photos let me know if you can view them otherwise I will post photos here

Re: How to get rid of burrs from the lawn?

Hi @Imz93,

To tackle the problem effectively, it’s important to understand the lifecycle of bindii. The best time to spray for bindii is when the plant begins to grow but hasn’t yet produced its seed pods. Applying a selective herbicide designed for broadleaf weeds during this period will kill the plants before they form the sharp prickles. Once the prickles have formed, the bindii has already set seed, and your only option is to manually remove the plants by digging them out.

I love the idea of the synthetic turf, and that's what I would be doing. Since this might only be a temporary solution, a budget-friendly option like the Coolaroo 1.83 x 1m 9mm Handy Synthetic Turf would be a good choice.
