I have two trident maples and the leaves on both are doing this. I can see any signs of bugs or anything. Anyone got any ideas what's causing this?
Hi @Troy2,
It looks like your trident maples are experiencing leaf curl which is usually a stress reaction to over or underwatering, nutrient deficiency, insects or fungal issues.
Start by checking your soil is draining adequately. If your plant's roots are sitting sodden for extended periods, this can cause issues. Maintain consistent watering, but do not add additional water if the soil is still wet when you go to water. Check that your pot has a drain hole and if not, drill some holes in the base of the pot to allow excess water to drain.
Nutrient deficiency, especially a lack of potassium, can cause leaves to curl. Applying a balanced slow-release fertiliser such as this Scotts Osmocote All Purpose Controlled Release Fertiliser will give it the nutrients it needs and will certainly be worthwhile for the plant's overall health.
Inspect the plant for any insects. Look for evidence of leaves being chewed as this could indicate insects are present. If you find any insects, use a suitable insecticide to treat the insects you find. If you find any and are unsure, please upload an image so we can help.
It seems unlikely there is a fungal issue from your photos, but if you find anything that resembles fungus, increase airflow around the plant, direct any watering to the base of the plant as opposed to the leaves and remove any affected parts of the plant. If you can identify the fungus, a fungicide such as Mancozeb or Liquid Copper Fungicide may come in handy.
