Hi. A section of my lawn that is shared with a neighbour is turning brown and dying. I noticed that the sand has a different colour. Slightly light brown. Do you know what caused it and how to fix it? Thank you in advance for your help.
Hello @3jidaddy
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about your lawn.
The browning of the grass in this shared lawn section could result from a few potential causes, especially since you mentioned a difference in sand colour. It’s possible that this area has been affected by soil compaction, poor drainage, or contamination, such as from pet urine or a chemical spill. The lighter brown sand might indicate that the soil in that area has been altered, perhaps through runoff or recent work near the utility box.
To fix it, I suggest testing the soil condition first. the store sells soil pH test kits that can help determine whether the soil is too acidic or alkaline, which might be stressing the grass. If the pH is off, you can adjust it using products like garden lime (for acidic soil) or sulphur (for alkaline soil). Additionally, applying lawn topdressing with a blend of organic material and sand can improve soil health and help the grass recover.
If compaction is an issue, aerate the soil with a manual aerator. Following that, apply a quality lawn fertilizer to encourage new growth. Scotts Lawn Builder is an excellent slow-release option that provides balanced nutrients for repair. Please take care not to aerate too close to the utility box for safety.
Finally, ensure the area is receiving enough water. Sometimes, utility boxes like the one in your photo can create drier spots around them due to heat or disturbed soil. Mulching lightly around the box (avoiding grass areas) can help retain moisture and keep the area cooler.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
