Our retaining wall in the garden has some big spaces/gaps, and we’re wondering what we can use to fill in the holes?
because of the size we’re worried for snakes during summer, and the cane toads also love to hang out here.
ideally looking for a simple/cheap solution that doesn’t look horrible, and am also assuming that filling the gaps with cement would create drainage/water runoff issues with rain? Any ideas would be so helpful!
Hi @rubymae03,
I believe all the gaps above the third block course can be filled with mortar. If you're concerned about water drainage, you can leave smaller weep holes at the bottom of the wall to allow water to escape while filling the majority of the gaps to keep out pests like snakes and cane toads. This will allow water to hit the back of the wall, travel down it and then out the bottom. For context, most straight block retaining walls don't have gaps in them, though drainage is typically installed behind them to redirect water.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
