How to cut established tree roots?

Hi all,

Wondering if you could help me with some advice. I wanted to pave this area, however there are some tree roots that seem quite large in the way. Wondering if I would be safe to cut these or if it would just kill the tree? They're about 2.5 meters away. But also assuming I'll come across more.

Re: How to cut established tree roots?

Hello @C0urtn3y

Thanks for sharing your question about cutting the roots of your tree. I propose engaging the services of an arborist to analyse the structure of your tree roots. They will be in the best position to tell you if cutting the roots will harm your tree. They should also be able to advise you if putting pavers near that area is a sound idea.

As a possible alternative, I propose thinking about installing a low-level deck instead - Low-level composite deck over concrete by @diy_hausdesigns is a good example of a low-level deck used for relaxation and entertainment.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.

Eric

Re: How to cut established tree roots?

Hi @C0urtn3y

@EricL  Idea  of a slightly raised  deck is  good  for you and the tree.

Cutting roots is a  risky business I was putting in a  pond and had a neighbours tree near the fence I cut a  couple  surface  roots  out from under the fence.with in 2 days most of the leaves fell off and was dead  I offered to replace the tree they choose not to replace it.

In your  case its the other not yet found roots that may get in the way of your  plans.

So a  raised wooden deck will allow tree root movement  with out lifting concrete or  pavers allow  rain water to get to the roots and potentially be a win win  for you and the tree.
