How to create standalone topless arbour with star jasmine?

Hi team,

I’m looking to create 6m length arbour either side of the path but without the top.

The intention is to concrete in a few 100mm or 90mm posts around 1800mm apart.

My issue is now what do I use to enable the star Jasmin to climb.
100x100 gal mesh or stainless mesh or do I run SS  cable and criss cross and at what distance apart.

I’m near the water and want it to last.

thanks in advance.

Nick

Re: standalone topless arbour with star jasmin

Hi @kontact00,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

Thank you for your question about what products to use for star jasmine to climb on your garden arbour.

Due to your proximity to water, stainless steel is the way to go.

Unfortunately, I am not aware of a stainless-steel mesh product, so this limits us to cable such as this Pinnacle 3.2mm x 30m Marine Grade Stainless Steel Wire Rope.

If you want to run your cable in a crisscross pattern, you must attach rails, such as these 75 x 38mm Fence Rails between the top and bottom of your posts so the cable can be attached and tension on all four sides of the opening.

You can see in Training climbers to screen a fence by @royq that the cables are run diagonally and attached at 600mm spacings. Something like this might be good for you, but if you were looking for a fuller look, 200-300mm spacings would be better, but more wire will need to be used.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Re: standalone topless arbour with star jasmin

Thanks for that Jacob. What would be the widest distance  I could go between the posts to minimise the number the holes and concreting I would need for I do.

i.e would the wire and post handle 2m width without sagging from the weight.

Cheers

Re: standalone topless arbour with star jasmin

Hi @kontact00,

Two metres between posts should be fine.

The main thing is to ensure the wire rope is tensioned well to prevent any sagging. These Taskmaster 5mm 316 Stainless Steel Hook/Eye Turnbuckle Balustrade Kits will have everything you need to mount and get your wire rope tight.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
