Can i prune these roses now?

IMG_8739.jpeg

 Hi

i am concerned that the shoots above the trestle are unsupported and when they flower will destroy the flowers as we have winds up to 90kmh and routinely 60-70kmh.

I’d like to take them off down to trestle height.

Re: Can i prune these roses now?

Hi @John57,

Thank you for your question about pruning your roses.

Yes, you can prune roses now, even outside the usual season, though it may mean sacrificing some blooms. This is sometimes referred to as damage control pruning, where the focus is on the plant's health and structure rather than maximizing flowers.

While pruning out of season may reduce flowering temporarily, it can encourage stronger, healthier growth in the long run.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Mission accomplished, thanks for helping me convince my wife it was the right thing to do.

Much appreciated

I have the same question for this South African protea. It seems heavily burdened with its growth right now.

Any instructions on how to do this well please?

John

Re: Can i prune these roses now?

Hi @John57,

Early spring is a good time to prune a South African Protea, so I'd suggest nothing is stopping you from doing some pruning now. Once again, you may forego some flower blossoms, however the longer-term health of the plant will not be affected.

Proteas generally don't need heavy pruning. Focus on removing older stems and thinning them out to let light into the centre of the plant.

Cut out any dead, diseased, or damaged branches to improve airflow and health, aiming to remove 1/3 the length of the stem.

Ensure you give them a good water after pruning so they are well hydrated and the recovery can begin immediately.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
