Re: What garage door lubricant to use?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Ramdeepa. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about a squeaky garage door.

It would be best to reference your manual to identify if a specific lubricant should be used on the door. Can you tell where the squeaky noise is coming from? This would help us provide the correct product to use. Typically, grease would be used on rollers, tracks and chains, and any panel hinges could be lubricated with 3-In-One 300g Garage Door Lube. It's best to use the grease on the rollers, tracks and chains as its sticky nature will hold it in place for longer.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: What garage door lubricant to use?

Hey @MitchellMc  I kind have same issue. Mine is only 1 year old garage door. Noise is not that loud but it makes squeaky noise usually from door panels while opening.

I have sprayed once we 40 on hinges but I don't know if that helps it or made it worse. As per manual it says recommended lubricant is silicone based. But I bought 3in1 from Bunnings, now I'm confused If I use it or not? And which parts I can spray lube or apply grease on roller?

Attached door photo for your reference.

Re: What garage door lubricant to use?

Hi @sau1

A mate of mine installs and repairs garage doors. His recommendation is not to use WD40 or similar as it attracts dust and debris and will clog up moving parts.

Any of the known brands like WD “Silicone” based lubricants is what’s recommended on all moving parts and roller bearings. I’ve been using this type of product for years and have always found it to be the cleanest method of lubrication. Just wipe the area clean of excess build up and give a light spray, then operate the door a few times. Do this every few months.

Re: What garage door lubricant to use?

Hi @sau1,

As @Nailbag has said, standard WD40 is not the best product for this application.

I'd suggest using either 3-In-One 300g Garage Door Lubricant or WD-40 300g Specialist High Performance White Lithium Grease.

Give the rollers a clean prior to application to remove any dirt or grime that has built up.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
