How to seal MDF workbench?

Hi, I'm converting my shed into a workshop for more "potteringaround".

I have bought a unit that has 25mm raw MDF workbench. This will be used to house my wood lathe, drill press and drop saw (very exciting as this the first time they will be set up ready go). I have a seperate workbench with a vice and banging about.

My question is;

what would you recommend to seal the MDF bench top? Obvisously nothing that will make it slippery (lathe will be permanently attached) but it needs to resist any splills or potentially future leaky roof.

My initial thought was Beeswax furniture polish, I have used it on MDF before and restorations, and it would would provide some grip but would it be too sticky?  Would I be better off with a pure beeswax or a liquid one?

The other option would be a matt or stain varnish. I don't want to paint it.

Re: Sealing MDF workbench

Happy to.post a pic, so long as it doesn't breach amd group rules (which I can't seem to locate) As it wasn't purchased from the company that facilitates this group.

Buy for now, I better go and play with my adult sized meccano!

Good thought. If I'm luck I might be able to find some offcuts.

Evening @potteringaround

With your concern about posting outside links  I get it, When I am having the same concerns (mostly it comes down to respect for Bunnings and Bunnings products so I factor that in over a decision to post)

For instance I have posted

"The big Blue F Social media page"

"Ikea"

"Spotlight"

And if I come across, say sound insulation companies I may post a link to their page or say search google for "the type products name" so anyone will get it first search.

I dont bad mouth a product, I just dont mention it  far better I figure.

As to overseas or totally online auction/purchase places I generally dont post them as it opens a kettle of fish support wise.

You could always hit up one of the moderartors  They keep a good watch over the page

Re: Sealing MDF workbench

Hi Dave,

2 weekends of work and the shed is definitely starting to feel like a workshop.

I ended up using an oil based varnish mostly because it was what I had on hand. 2 coats on the top & underside and 4 on the edges. I then.popped some 4mm rubber over the top, which seems to be working well so far.

Yes, I know the lathe is not in a usable spot but I mostly do furniture restoration so it will be used infrequently and then probably only for sanding and turned components.

My partner came up with the suggestion of putting up the older tools from our fathers & neighbour, and I really love being able to see them not just shut away in a box.

I am really enjoying these tactix storage towers which clip together. Each of the clear boxes has a lid so you can pull it out and take it with without the fear of dropping it and screws going everywhere.

Pics of the progress thus far.

Hello @potteringaround

Thank you so much for sharing that update about your workshop. I'm glad you found a way to seal your MDF benchtop. It's slowly starting to take shape, and I reckon in a few more weeks it will be totally transformed into a fully operational workshop.

Good Evening @potteringaround

Love your workbench and the way the tools are accesable  And using up what you have is something I try and do as well. That rubber mat is brilliant and will definently extend the lifespan of your bench!

A little bit envious

Hi @potteringaround

Nice work, that really does look like a proper well organised workshop now.
