How to insulate brick garage with flat metal roof?

Hi all,

I’m keen to make this garage space more comfortable by insulating. I’m thinking of foilboard insulation for the garage door and roof.

What I am struggling with is what to do with the walls. The walls have an additional layer of bricks, (pillars), where the beams that support the roof are. There are 5 of these pillar every 1.8M on both sides.

I was thinking of building frames and attaching them between these brick pillars and adding wall insulation only between these pillars. I was just going to have only plywood over the pillars. Will this actually make any difference to the climate inside the garage?

I lose too much space if I insulate over the brick pillars.

Another question, do I new to put sarking on the brick wall before putting the frame up and installing the wall batts?

I would greatly appreciate any advice.

thanks,

k

Could you also please confirm you are in Australia as the use of foil insulation products is prohibited in New Zealand.

Re: How to insulate brick garage with flat metal roof?

Hello @EskapeShare

Your idea of building a timber frame to hold the insulation in place is an excellent idea. If you wish to install sarking, I propose building the frame first and attaching the sarking to the back of the frame before attaching it to the wall. Since you are building a frame, I recommend using standard batts rather than the foil board as it has a greater R insulation rating. In regards to the pillars, I suggest covering them up with Ametalin insulation and clipping it to the timber frames that are to the left and right of it.

Here is a link to our best advice: How do you add insulation to a garage or shed?

Just a friendly reminder to our New Zealand members that the use of foil insulation and sarking products is prohibited.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
