An ongoing total garage renovation into a functional home gym.
CONTEXT
I've always been into sport and fitness; health and exercise were always a passion. However, I always hated a machine being occupied, a crowded gym, the crappy music the PT at the counter decides is appropriate for everyone or being interrupted by someone wanting to talk. I go to the gym to do a workout, nothing more, and I hate wasting time at the place. This, and skyrocketing gym costs, is why I decided to build a home gym. Fast-forward to owning our own home and I could fully realise this project.
GOAL
Created a gym that provides everything I need in one space that will save me money in fees in the long run, stand the test of time, be accessible to friends and actually feel like a gym, and not just a few bits of equipment in a garage.
Floor - The first thing I needed was a solid base, gym flooring is expensive, but I wanted a bit of design and colour in it rather than just black everywhere. Originally I wanted Red, but Bunnings did not have them at the time, so I went with a combination of Black EVA 50 x 50cm Interlock Foam Mats, with Solid Blue as a contrasting colour. They have served me incredibly well for years.
PRIMARY WALL
The Primary wall station uses 90x45 treated pine secured to the walls studs. The boxing Bag & Dip Station were originally a floor multi-station that I took apart and mounted onto the wall. On the end is a Smith Machine, which we cut the back support off to save space and securely mounted it to the wall, this thing is solid and isn't going anywhere. Just in front of it is my Bench Press, and to its right is the Leg Press.
BACK WALL
The back wall has my Bench Press. I created two shelves here, one is where our wireless modem sits, the other is storage for my belts. On the wall next to it are Broom Holders that secure my 3 primary bars, and some simple brackets that hold my Hex Bar. The Window is Mirror Tinted, so no one can see in, it also deflects an incredible amount of heat, sunlight and glare. My Curl rack is just in front of this, as well as the treadmill.
Next we have my primary workspace inside the gym. I used an old desk that I used to use in my office as the workspace, and an old storage box holder to store things like extra protein and my steam cleaner, which I use on every item I used in the gym. I then have my supplements, these are split up into Post Workout Supps and Protein. My speaker system is also located here, with the speakers themselves being wall mounted onto the front wall. Then there's my display wall, which has some of my wife and I's achievements.
FRONT WALL
The Front Wall is home to my many accessories. First is the television, wall mounted and is used when I'm on the treadmill for long runs. Next is the various cable machine attachments (The cable machine is in the centre of the room) and resistance bands. The Top Shelf holds spare protein that my friends and family use when they come to use this gym in their own time. There is also a foam roller up there and our MMA gloves for the boxing bag. Next is two clipboards that are magnetically attached to the wall, this is where we put this weeks workouts onto. Below this is a cut shelf (at this point I should point out that all shelfs are made from Bunnings dressed pine) which holds my wife’s yoga mat, a couple of rollers and various pens. The shelf holds a single hook that holds my face towel.
Below this is an A frame standard weight Plate Rack that was cut in half and wall mounted to save space, these hold 1.25kg, 2.5kg & 5kg weight plates purchased from K-Mart.
Next to this is my Dumbbell rack (a step is hidden below this), and above it is a mirror purchased from Bunnings (I can't find it on the website, so it might not be there anymore) and wall mounted, which is great for checking form. To the right of this is two more shelves, the top shelf holds pre-workout and morning supplements that I just want to come in and grab quickly. The next one is where I keep my smelling salts, weight clips, wrist wraps / weights & some push up devices. The hook holds my skipping ropes, while the second A frame that was cut in half is located here, which holds 10kg & 20kg weight plates.
The fan you see is an Arlec 75cm Black Remote Controlled Industrial Wall Fan, and it has saved my life so many times since being wall mounted there. The cord is tucked into the cable runner along the top of the wall (with the speakers) and down onto the back wall where the power points are located. And a fight club poster, because why not?
So that's my gym, it's constantly under development but it's doing the job well. I would cost everything in this room around $5k, with a lot of it being bought on special or handed down, with the average yearly gym membership being around $1,140, I've already made back my investment.
Always got excited coming to Bunnings to get stuff for in here, so I'm hoping this might inspire others to do their own builds. If you have any questions about this, please let me know
Shelves - The Shelves use various angle brackets to hold them up, which are secured to the wall using wall mates. You can find similar brackets here: https://www.bunnings.com.au/carinya-150-x-175-x-25-x-6mm-black-heavy-duty-manhattan-angle-bracket-si...
Hi @Remarka6le
What an amazing looking home gym! It's remarkable that you've managed to fit in so much workout equipment in such a limited space. Everything is so well organized and looks solidly fitted. Excellent choice on the interlocking foam mats for the flooring, should it ever get damaged, repairing it won't be an issue. How long did it take you to build the entire setup? Is membership available?
Thank you so much for sharing the details of your fantastic home gym.
Eric
Hey @EricL
It's only gotten to this point at the end of last year, but all the equipment has been in there for at least two years. Membership always available
