D.I.Y. outdoor servery

An old piece of marble mounted on brackets makes a new servery outside a kitchen window.

The project

We set out to clean up the pergola area and utilise the space under the kitchen window. It was previously where we kept the rubbish bin, bags of potting mix and gardening tools. 

We had a spare piece of marble and decided to make our own D.I.Y. version of a servery/serving bench. We didn't want to splash out on a new gas strut window, so we worked with what was already there. We removed the flyscreen on the existing kitchen window so that when the window is open, food/drinks etc. can be passed through or placed on the servery top.

The project only cost us $26.56 which was the cost of the 4 brackets from Bunnings (Carinya 200 x 250 x 25 x 3.5mm Stayed Straight Bracket) as we already had the existing stone, timber for the wedges and silicone to secure the stone to the brackets.

 

Spacing out the brackets, using timber wedges against the brick ledge and checking that all the brackets are level.

It was good to finally use the marble in a D.I.Y. project. The project only took a couple of hours to complete, and I can imagine you could also recreate the same D.I.Y. servery with a timber benchtop.

Hi, I’m inspired by this idea. Thinking of doing something similar with an offcut of marble I’ve got. Our brickwork is a bit steeper and protrudes more than yours. Just wondering how you fixed the marble onto those brackets? Did you fix them on with screws/ glue and how you went about it?

Let me tag @homeinmelbourne so they are alerted to your question, and hopefully, they'll be able to answer it for you.

If the brackets extend out and support most of the width of the marble, I suspect you'd find a product like Sikaflex 11FC that would do a decent job of adhering them together.
