This sturdy, purpose-built sewing table has room for several sewing machines on its 2.2m timber benchtop.
I finally found time to do a little reno on my sewing room.
First I had to go through about 10 plastic storage boxes full of fabric and decide what had to go and what stayed – some of the stuff I hadn't seen for about 10 years. It took me about three or four days to do that.
I got all the materials needed to build myself a new sewing table courtesy of Workshop community member Nham – thank you very much!
It was a challenge, but I'm happy with the outcome. I had my builder friend come and cut 5cm off the width of the benchtop with his fancy circular saw as I didn't think I'd be able to do it neatly with mine.
I already had the paint, which I had bought from Bunnings for other projects. For the frame I used one coat of Taubmans Tradex Ultra Prep and two coats of Tradex oil-based enamel. For the benchtop I used four coats of Bondall Monocel oil-based satin clear wood varnish (sanding between each coat with 240-grit sandpaper).
I just love using both these paints. They give such a good durable finish.
As I made my desk 2.2m long (to fit all my machines) I put four bracing pieces across the top of the frame at Nham's suggestion and one long one in the middle to the floor so it wouldn't sag when the benchtop went on.
I replaced all the plastic tubs with one 14-cube storage unit and one eight-cube storage unit plus Ezy Storage Brickor plastic baskets, all from Bunnings.
I can actually move and find stuff in the room now. Before I just kept the door closed. I'm very happy with my new sewing centre.

Well done to all @rubytuesday1953 I did something similar in my craft/sewing room, but looking at moving house, so will have to come up with some more compact ideas as I won't have a room as big as the one I have now.
Great work, gives me some ideas to possibly implement when I do move.
