What protective clear coating should I use over a painted cabinet?

What protective clear coating should I use over a painted cabinet?

I wish to protect my black painted cabinet from water and sun. It will be used as a bathroom vanity.

I do not know whether the existing paint is water or oil based.

Any suggestions what type of product I should use?

Re: What protective clear coating should I use over a painted cabinet?

Hello @AlexanderS

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's marvellous to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about what clear coat to use.

Would you happen to know what brand of paint you used for the cabinet? Was it already painted when you purchased it? I only ask because of paint compatibility; Clear coats always work best when applied to the same brand of topcoat. Blindly coating your cabinet with a clearcoat might produce unpredictable results.

If you can manage to get some information about the paint that was used, we might be able to make recommendations on what clear coat to use.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
