I'm putting tiles on top of villaboard on the walls in my bathroom. I understand I need to stop the villaboard joints with base coat, but is top coat just for making the finish good enough to paint, or does it form some structural function under tiles as well?
I'll be priming the result with Primebond, then using Liquid Flash 1 for the waterproof membrane.

No top coat is required when tiling over the boards. The basic steps for the recessed sides are to clean, base coat, embed tape, a thin layer of base coat to fill the recess, and then a wider base coat to cover the entire recessed area. Here's the installation guide.
Using the top coat is purely for finishing a wall that will be painted.
