Hi all, I have a regular type of glass shower screen, which is hinged for cleaning etc. Recently it’s started a very loud squeak, like it wants to be oiled. I did try oiling it but it made no difference. Am I oiling it in the wrong place (ie at the top and along the side). I’ve attached a pic but it’s a tricky place to try and photograph!
Thanks for your help! Elle
Hi @Elle44,
Thank you for your question about fixing a squeaking shower screen hinge.
It sounds like you're doing the right thing, but I suspect the cause of the squeaking might be sediment build-up from being exposed to water. Water will get in and then dry, depositing any minerals within the water inside the hinge.
I'd suggest spraying CLR 750ml Bathroom And Kitchen Cleaner along the full height of the hinge and then moving it back and forth so the cleaner penetrates inside the hinge. Allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes and then clean out the hinge with clean water.
Once you've done this, I'd suggest using WD-40 300g Specialist Fast Release Penetrant along the full height of the hinge. This is a penetrative WD-40 that is often used to help release parts that are stuck due to corrosion. Its formula should penetrate deeper into the hinge than a standard oil will.
Let me know what you think and if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Jacob
Hi JacobZ, many thanks for your response. I was a little afraid I’d stuffed it up by oiling, so thanks too for the reassurance! I’ll try the cleaner and penetrating WD40 and let you know how I go.
Thanks again, Elle
Thanks JacobZ, worked a treat — no more squeaking. It worked almost straight away which is a bonus. Thanks again, Elle44
