I've just purchased a place built in the 70s that has had one of the bedrooms opened up to the adjoining bedroom and made into a non-enclosed ensuite. Before settlement I'm obsessing over what I can DIY to improve the place and feel like the ensuite is a necessity.
The problem I can see is that the walls are timber paneling that have just been painted with a bathroom paint. I doubt there's any waterproofing given there's none behind the splashback (which has evidently detached as the adhesive was applied directly to the timber).
What's the best play here? I'd love to re-tile the floor up to the ceiling after enclosing the room but how can I do that with this current cladding?
Hello @nicwalsh
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your ensuite.
I suggest having a quick look at this guide - How to plan a bathroom renovation by @Adam_W. There are some excellent suggestions in the discussion which will give you a general idea of how you can go about renovating your bathroom. In regards to your questions about tiling, this is definitely a discussion you should be having with your builder/bathroom renovator. Do the timber panels need to come off and be replaced with cement sheets for tiling? Will the tiled flooring need to be removed as well?
Your builder will be able to answer these questions along with water proofing and shower reinstallation. If you have a very particular look you want your bathroom to have, I suggest drawing it on paper or at least writing down what features you would like to see.
Before you begin, I recommend having your walls tested for asbestos just to be on the safe side.
