Just Starting Out

Hi, I’m new to this site. Looking to attempt my first tiling job. To lay new tiles over existing floor tiles in my laundry. Is there a ‘how to do that’ video in this forum? Thankyou

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @jaynerookie. It's fabulous to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about tiling.

We have a guide on How to lay floor tiles, but nothing specific on how to tile over tiles.

Tiling over existing tiles can be a time-saving way to update a surface, but it's essential to approach the job carefully for the best results. First, you need to check for any "drummy" tiles—those that sound hollow when tapped. These tiles likely have a void underneath, meaning the adhesive hasn't properly bonded to the surface, which can cause issues with the new tiles. If you find any drummy tiles, you'll need to repair or replace them before proceeding. This may involve removing the damaged tile, cleaning up the adhesive, and re-tiling.

Once you've addressed any problem areas, the next step is to clean the existing tiles thoroughly, ensuring there’s no grease, grime, or residue left. After cleaning, you should roughen the surface of the old tiles with 180-grit sandpaper and then apply bonding agent such as Crommelin 1L Tile On Tile Primer to help the new tiles adhere properly.

Next, apply an adhesive like Davco 20kg SMP Evo Tile Adhesive, and spread it evenly using a notched trowel. Press your new tiles into place, ensuring they’re level and aligned. Allow the adhesive to set, then grout the tiles once the adhesive has fully cured.

This method works best on surfaces like kitchen backsplashes or bathroom walls, but if you’re tiling a floor, you may need to consider the added height or potential issues with uneven surfaces. For larger, high-traffic areas, it's often better to remove the old tiles first.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
