How to remove tap spindle?

Hey guys,

I've had a problem with my wall mounted shower tap and figured out the spindle is the problem. I want to keep the same tap hardware but just put it onto a new spindle, however removing the old spindle has proved to be difficult. I've used one of the special tools to get the locking nut off and pull the actual tap head off but now there's this plastic piece preventing me from pulling the spindle out. Any idea on how to get this off? it's got a Philips head at the top which you can see ive tried to no success but the bottom has these grooved pieces.

any help would be much appreciated,

thanks in advance

Re: How to remove tap spindle?

Hello @Nickleby

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your tap spindle.

It's probable that the plastic head guide has gotten stuck due to calcification. I propose using a heat gun to soften the grip of the plastic and hitting it from the bottom side with a Craftright 5-in-1 Scraper. It might be necessary to heat it for an extended period of time so that it goes totally soft. Please make sure to wear personal protection such as thick gloves, goggles and a mask. Please be aware that the brass part of the spindle will heat up as well and is a touching hazard so please make sure you are in a safe well-ventilated space with a stone or concrete surface to lay the spindle on.

Please bring the handle with you to the store so that you can make sure that the replacement spindle will fit your old handle set.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
