Hi, I have a couple of brick walls that I will be sheeting with villaboard and tiling for a bathroom reno. One of the walls is the shower wall so it's extra important to get this right. The walls aren't very even so I've been looking for the best way to go about it. It seems that using metal furring channels is the easiest and most reliable to prevent issues in the future. I understand the basic concept but can't seem to find any good instructions for the installation, especially when using the clips to level things out. If there is any link or video to good instructions I would be very appreciative. The other issue I have is once the furring strips are installed, how do I install the villaboard? It seems James Hardie only recommends nails when tiling but would screws be more appropriate for the metal? Thanks in advance.
Hi @cb496,
On page 10 of the Villaboard installation guide, it shows how to lay out your furring channels over your brick wall. We stock Siniat furring channels and clips in-store.
I haven't come across the part about James Hardie only recommending nails. I note this reference on an image showing timber studs "Where Villaboard™ Lining is to be finished with tiles, the sheets must be fixed with fasteners only as shown in Figure 10." However, screws are advised for attaching to the steel frames or furring channels.
I'm not aware of any specific guides to installing the furring channel, but the process is similar to the following:
To install adjustable height furring clips on an uneven brick wall, start by marking the desired height and position for your sheeting. A laser level can be helpful for this. Attach the furring clips directly to the brick using masonry screws, ensuring they're spaced evenly according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Adjust the height of the clips using their built-in mechanism to create a level surface across the wall. Once the clips are properly adjusted, secure the furring channels into the clips, checking for level as you go. Finally, attach the sheeting to the furring channels, completing the installation.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
