How to fix bathroom sink tap leaking during use?

I have just changed the washer in the bathroom basin taps and now the hot water tap is leaking through the base of the tap. I’ve taken it out and reset it again and still having the same problem. Doesn’t leak whilst it’s off just whilst it’s running.

Re: bathroom sink taps

Hello @Porter84

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your sink taps.

If the tap leaks at the base when the tap is on, odds are the spindle body O rings have perished and need to be replaced. Please have a look at this guide - How to replace a tap washer and proceed to step 5 and have a look at photo number 5.4. You'll see the O rings I'm referring to, and if the repair kit you purchased has them, then it will make it so much easier.

Generally, once you've removed your spindle assembly the spindle axle must be unscrewed from the body. This will give you access to the O rings. Use a small sharp flat blade screwdriver to lift and roll the old O rings off. Please note that it's important to apply the plumber's grease after you've installed the new O rings.

Re-assemble the spindle and install the spindle back into place. Please make sure to test the tap before you put the cover flange back on. This is to make sure that no water is flowing out of the spindle body.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
