How to do a toilet rough in?

IMG_20241126_142737.jpg

Hi. I recently had a plumber do some work, including the rough in for a toilet in a bathroom reno. I was surprised that the plumber didn't install a flange under the collar and was wondering if this is necessary. To me, the collar also looks quite low in the floor once you take into account the screed and tiles. It is only 40 mm from the floor to lower part of the lip and the tilier expects the floor to come up about 50mm with the screed, tiles and glue. I have already been back to the plumber and he said it is fine. Any advice?

Re: How to do a toilet rough in?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @cb496. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about plumbing installations.

It sounds like you've done the right thing by addressing your concerns with the plumber directly. Plumbing codes can be complex and vary depending on your location, so it’s not uncommon for clients to seek clarification on whether an installation meets the requirements.

If the plumber has assured you it’s fine without the flange, they might have a specific method or workaround in mind, but it’s worth confirming this aligns with local plumbing codes. A second opinion from another plumber or a building inspector could provide peace of mind.

If the same plumber will be installing the toilet, they are likely to ensure it works correctly, as they will have to address any miscalculations themselves. However, if a different professional will install the toilet, it might be prudent to revisit the height issue with your current plumber before proceeding further.

Once the screed is laid, and before the tiles are set, it would be wise to double-check everything with whoever is installing the toilet to avoid complications later. Clear communication between the plumber, tiler, and toilet installer will ensure a smooth process.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
