Good morning everyone! I'm seeking advice. I am sticking an acrylic shower liner onto porcelain tiles. So, I know I can do it but everywhere I've read tells me something different. One says use fine grit some say coarse, I've tried both and it's made not one bit of difference. So my question is a) do I really need to rough it up for better adhesion and b) how? What grit? Is there a better way?
Hi @Jeanagh,
When sticking an acrylic shower liner onto porcelain tiles, it’s important to follow the specific instructions from the acrylic shower liner manufacturer. The manufacturer’s recommendations will provide the most reliable guidance for surface preparation and adhesion. If it were one of our panels, I’d be happy to help determine the exact steps for installation.
As for the sanding, you may not visibly see the difference between using fine or coarse sandpaper, but the key is to slightly dull the glaze of the porcelain tiles. The goal is to make the surface less slick to allow for better adhesion, not to create visible scratches. To test this, try running your fingertips over a non-sanded tile and a sanded one—you might notice the difference in texture, even if it’s not immediately visible.
I’ve had similar discussions with companies like Dulux regarding their paints, where they confirmed that the sanding marks may not be noticeable to the eye, but it’s still essential to ensure the surface is adequately prepared. So, just give it a good sanding with an appropriate grit (usually something in the middle range, like 180-grit), and you should be set for a solid bond.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
