How to restore timber window frame?

Hello,

I’m trying to restore some old window sashes which have a bit of detailing on the inside edge of the rails and stiles. Would anyone know what tool or router bit could be used to make this or similar detail?

Thank you!

Re: Woodworking - How to acheive this detail on window sash

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @SamuelWill. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about restoring a window frame.

It looks like the frame detail has been heavily painted over, obscuring the original profile. Are you intending to route the edge to restore it, or are you simply looking to clean it up?

It’s hard to determine the exact profile under the paint, but it appears to resemble something like an Ultra 6.4 x 4mm Roman Ogee Router Bit. However, it’s unlikely to match perfectly in size. Routing over the area could result in a size mismatch, which might produce odd results or, worse, damage the edge entirely.

If it’s just one window, you might be safer using a paint stripper and carefully hand-sanding the profile to remove the paint buildup. This method preserves the original detail and avoids the risk of accidental damage from routing.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
