How to repair roof tile pointing and bedding?
Hi legends. Looking for some help. I see that the mortar is crumbling on the more exposed parts of my tiles roof and I need to fix. I’ll go and clean up the old mortar but need some help on how to replace. What mortar do I use to replace it with? Just a standard mortar mix? What product do I grab? Then once the mortal is laid down do I finish with a product like Dunlop pointing mix?
cheers,
Coaster

Re: Roof Tile Pointing and Bedding
Hi @Coaster,
There’s a bit of a difference between bedding and pointing, and it’s important to get both right for a solid and weatherproof roof. Bedding is the first step — it’s the standard mortar mix used to secure the ridge tiles in place on top of the roof. This layer gives the ridge tiles their structural support. Once the bedding has set, you then apply pointing over the top. Pointing is a more flexible material used to fill the gap between the ridge tiles and the roof tiles. It helps to create a weatherproof seal and allows for slight movement over time without cracking. For the pointing, a premixed product like Dunlop Roof Tile Pointing is a great option and will make the job easier.
You can see more application info in their online guide.
Since you'll likely be using a ladder, take a quick look at this helpful guide: How to use ladders safely.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Roof Tile Pointing and Bedding
Thanks Mitch. I did my research and worked out the difference, my question was more around do you have to use anything different ect to “normal” mortar as I saw some special mortar in some YouTube vids, etc. presume the standard stuff is fine from your comments. Thanks again.

Re: Roof Tile Pointing and Bedding
Hello @Coaster
Yes, ordinary mortar will be sufficient enough to use as bedding for your tiled roof.
