How to repair and patch up Vinyl Floorboards

Hello,

A few years ago, we had an internal wall removed to open up our living area. One of the side-effects of this was that that area where the wall used to meet the floor has a large L-shaped gap in the vinyl flooring which we would now like to patch up with proper vinyl flooring (see photo #1 and #2).

We've previously just used cork board and other self-adhesive vinyl planks to patch it up (under a rug), but it's probably time for a more permanent solution.

We have 13 spare vinyl planks leftover by the previous owners, and they appear to not be self-adhesive. We're planning to use these to patch up the floor, potentially cutting them up if absolutely necessary to cover the required area.

There is an approx. 10mm gap between the lower section of the floor and the existing vinyl flooring (photo #3).

I'm guessing the process will roughly be:

1. Fit and secure 10mm thick planks of wood in-between the gap in the flooring (any type of wood here? and just standard wood glue?)

2. Remove the vinyl planks which have been intersected/cut by the previous wall. Unsure how to do this or if this is not possible?

3. Patch over the gaps with new vinyl planks using an adhesive.

But would appreciate any thoughts on the above process!

There are various odd shaped sections as well which might also be a little tricky (photo #4)

Hi @lm4

I would highly recommend getting the services of a vinyl floor repairer. They will be able to match (as close as possible) the original pattern and infill over the old. I used a similar service to patch a vinyl floor in our caravan after I swapped out the dining table that left a large patch in the centre of the floor. The repairer patched this seamlessly and worth every cent in the quality of finish.

Hi @lm4,

It's great to see @Nailbag has already jumped in with some advice.

I agree that a floor repairer would be the way to go. Matching floorboards seamlessly will take considerable skill and using a professional will ensure you get the best result possible.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
