How to reduce heat and glare from skylight?

Thinking of adding something here to cut down on the midday sun that’s baking my house. Does anyone have any recommendations? Ideally, it'll be somewhat retractable or (easily taken down) and refract the light and heat.

Re: How to reduce heat and glare from skylight?

Hi @carpedion,

Were you looking to cover just the specific area you highlighted, or the entire skylight section?

You might be best speaking with our Special Orders team in-store, as well as Velux, to see if there’s a custom solution that could work for your setup. Most Velux blinds attach directly to the skylight itself, but there might be an option to install something below the skylights, as shown in your picture.

Velux blinds are the only solution I’ve seen specifically designed for this type of issue, so I’d suggest starting with them. They also offer an in-home measuring service, which could be helpful in finding the best fit for your space.

Let me mention @Dave-1 and @Nailbag to see if they have any thoughts.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: How to reduce heat and glare from skylight?

Good afternoon @carpedion

My first throught was those blinds that @MitchellMc suggested. (I didnt know their name lol) The air gap within the flutes is what will really insulate the two areas. This would be my preference for doingthe job.

You could rig up some horizontal stay wires either side and run a looped shade material awning type deal so you could stretch it across the skylight area as needed and then pull it back when not. This would be my preference for looking great

The only other thing that comes to mind would be a solar tint to the inside of the windows. Not sure what improvements over the years it has had but could be worth looking into.

Re: How to reduce heat and glare from skylight?

Hello @carpedion

@Dave-1's idea is exactly what I had in mind when you mentioned that you wanted to reduce the glare and heat and still leave you the option of opening it up during winter. Using shade cloth is the ideal material for this project and the rest of the items you need to assemble it are available at the store. An example would be stainless steel carabiners, eyelet kit, and stainless-steel wire rope. Shade cloth comes in several colours so you can either match the tone of your ceiling or go for a dark contrast.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: How to reduce heat and glare from skylight?

Hi @carpedion

They aren't cheap but those Velux blinds @MitchellMc recommended are awesome. I would definitely include in the quote for electric ones over manual wind and with remote app control so you can schedule shading of the day. I think there are also add-on's for temperature triggering too now.
