How to permanently cover or seal a dog door?

Hi Bunnings,

We moved into a house and there is an existing pet door in the glass door.

For insulation, we would like to cover it permanently.

We do not have a pet and would like to seal it permanently

Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Permanently cover / seal a dog door

Hi @loserkite,

Thank you for your question about closing up a doggy door.

It's a bit of a pain because your door is glass, so you can't simply remove it and patch up the hole.

In order to stop it from standing out like crazy, my suggestion would be to grab a piece of Clear Polycarbonate Sheet, cut it to size and then stick it to the black border around the flap using silicone, ensuring there is a consistent bead around the full perimeter to ensure no air can seep in through the gaps.

Allow me to tag @Dave-1, @DIYGnome and @Noyade to see if they have any ideas.

Let me know what you think.

Afternoon @loserkite

That is one thing that sits in my mind, what do you do with a built in doggy door when you dont have a doggo

I would remove the "flapper" part of the doggy door.

Then would cit out two pieces of timber the same size (something that can withstand the weather) The perspex that @JacobZ mentions would be perfect but cutting two pieces exactly may be a pain.

Then I would use 8 of small short bolts, to go through both pieces. 3 down and 3 across (yeah I used my fingers as well lol) and clamp the door between them. It should seal nicely and if you paint it black then it will blend as much as a doggy door can. You could use something like  Pinnacle M6 x 35mm Black Ruspert® Round Head Bolts And Nuts - 6 Pack

Re: Permanently cover / seal a dog door

Thanks guys.

Wood seems to be a bit incoherent with the fogged class

May try the polycarbonate sheet....
