How to install Hanwood laminate flooring?

Hi all, can anyone please advise me about Hanwood 7mm laminate flooring. I am considering using those for a spare room. I am wondering if I need to use an underlay to put the laminate flooring onto concrete slab, or if I can put the boards directly on the concrete? It is not a wet area and as far as I know there are no moisture issues. Thanks!

Re: Hanwood laminate florring

Hi @caxelby,

Thank you for your question about the Hanwood 7mm laminate flooring.

This type of floating floor requires an underlay such as this QEP Silver Laminate Floating Floor Underlay both to add a softer feel under foot, but more importantly to create a moisture barrier between the flooring and the concrete.

Concrete can retain moisture, which can seep into the laminate flooring and cause damage such as warping, swelling, and mould growth. Underlay such as the one above, include a moisture barrier to protect the laminate from any moisture that rises from the concrete subfloor.

Even if there are no obvious moisture issues, water can rise through concrete due to a phenomenon known as rising damp. This is why all timber that is in direct contact with concrete needs a damp-proof barrier.

It is certainly worth using underlay for peace of mind that your new flooring will last for as long as possible.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: Hanwood laminate florring

Thanks so much for the quick reply Jacob! I am just wondering, aside from price, what is the difference between the underlay you linked above, and the QEP 2mm White laminate floor underlay?

Re: Hanwood laminate florring

Hi @caxelby,

The difference between the two is the foil layer.

This foil layer offers thermal insulation, superior moisture resistance and improved sound insulation compared to the Qep 2mm White Laminate Floor Underlay.

The main difference you will notice is the thermal insulation. If it is a hot day, the concrete will give off heat. The silver foil should be laid facing down to reflect the heat back into the slab.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: Hanwood laminate florring

Thank you, that makes sense. If I use a hybrid laminate product, does that still require underlay?

Re: Hanwood laminate florring

Hi @caxelby,

Luckily, hybrid laminate flooring does not require underlay, as it has a pre-adhered underlay attached to the planks.

This is much of the reason why hybrid flooring comes at a higher price point. As the underlay is already there, there is no need for an additional product, so the price is rolled into one.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Hi @caxelby,

I just thought I'd include the manufacturer's instructions for installing the laminate flooring. Also, we have this handy step-by-step guide: How to lay laminate flooring.

Let us know if you have further questions or need assistance with the installation.
