How to fix hole in ceiling plasterboard & cornice?

Hello!

I'm looking for tips on how to fix this hole in my ceiling. The hole is probably only 5cm wide, but it runs through the cornice as pictured.

I also need tips for re-fixing the cornice to the wall where it is starting to lift off.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @bella3. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about repair a ceiling.

To fix the ceiling, you’ll need to first install some backing timber behind the plasterboard. This can be done by inserting a piece of timber (such as a small timber batten) into the cavity behind the plasterboard and adhereing it in position with Liquid Nails to provide support. Once this is in place, you can either patch the hole with a new piece of plasterboard or use plaster filler to fill in the hole. If you’re replacing the plasterboard, simply cut a new piece to fit, screw it into place, and then tape the seams. After the filler or plasterboard is set, use a fine-grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges and blend the patch with the surrounding ceiling.

Where the gap meets the cornice, you'll need to fill the area and then, whilst the filler is still wet, sculpt it to replicate the moulding. You'll likely need to do this in several steps of filling and then sanding to get a good match.

As for the cornice, if it’s starting to lift off the wall, you’ll need to re-adhere it and ensure it’s properly secured. To do this, start by cleaning any dust or debris from the wall and cornice to ensure a good bond. If the cornice has come loose from the wall, you may need to remove any remaining adhesive or old nails, then apply a fresh adhesive. Press the cornice back into place, and for additional stability, you can use finishing nails or small screws to hold it temporarily while the adhesive sets. Once the cornice is secure, you can fill any gaps or cracks with joint compound, and once dried, sand it smooth to create a seamless finish.

Thank you so much @MitchellMc , this is extremely helpful!! Does using a piece of plasterboard usually offer a cleaner finish than just using the filler? I do already have some filler on hand so wonder if that + the backing timber solution might work?

Hi @bella3,

Either option will give you a nice clean finish if you take the time to smooth and sand it correctly.

Just make sure you use tape to reinforce the joins. If you choose to just fill the gap, fill the gap flush with the plasterboard, allow it to dry, then tape over the top before applying another coat to conceal the tape. 

Mesh tape, like this Builders Edge 50mm x 20m Fibreglass Builders Joint Tape is better for patching as it is nice and thin so the filler can be applied thinner and feathered out to conceal the join.
