How to cover up old wall panels?

Hello,

First time poster and renovator here. My partner and I are fixing up a small, modest house in Victoria that's endured some unfortunate DIY in it's 100+ years. We started removing wallpaper in the toilet, expecting to find cement sheeting, but it's a strange hardboard/fibreboard material attached directly to the studs. Not sure of exact product....it has a printed, glossy finish and was likely installed in 60-70's (see photo).

Just wondering if it's possible (and reasonable) to install the Easy Craft panelling over this product? It's a very tight space and we're hoping to avoid installing plasterboard. Guidance greatly appreciated!

Re: How to cover up old hardboard/fibreboard wall panels

Hello @MarieMichael

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about wall panels.

Before proceeding any further with your renovation work. I strongly suggest having your walls and ceilings tested for asbestos. Older homes tend to have asbestos lined sheeting as a form of fireproofing. If your walls test positive, you'll need to engage the services of a professional asbestos removal company. But if it tests negative then you can proceed with covering your wall with Easycraft Easy VJ panelling. It is suitable for all wet area interior wall & ceiling applications, made from ultra-moisture resistant MDF.

Please note that if you are installing Easycraft in the bathroom it can't be used inside the actual shower cubicle. It can only be used on the outside walls of the bathroom. Make sure to use the correct product such as the easycraft 9 x 2400 x 1200mm easyVJ100 Primed Wet Area Interior Wall Lining UMR MDF E0. It is suitable for all wet area interior wall & ceiling applications, made from ultra-moisture resistant MDF.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
