How do I fill hole in ceiling after HWS removal?

Hi guys,

Had my old Junkers hot water unit removed today, and because it was inside and had the flue through the ceiling, I now have a lovely hole🙄

I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas on how to cover it or fill it...without having to go through the roof.

I was thinking plywood, but not sure it would be flexible enough to get it through the hole.

I would appreciate some easy solutions, as it will more than likely be me that fixes it.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @SharonG. It's marvellous to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about filling a hole.

Is that a masonite coverplate surrounding the pipe, sitting proud of the ceiling? If so, the first step would be to remove it to create a flat surface for your repair. Once the coverplate is removed, you can install some supporting timber behind the hole. Cut strips of plywood or timber about 90mm wide and 60mm longer than the hole’s width. Slide these through the hole, position them to span across it, and secure them by screwing through the plasterboard into the timber. With the backing in place, you can either fill the hole with plaster filler in layers, building it up gradually, or cut a piece of plasterboard from a repair sheet to match the hole. Attach the plasterboard patch to the timber backing, fill the edges, sand smooth, and paint to match the ceiling.

Be aware that some older homes may have used asbestos-containing materials in ceilings and wall linings. If you suspect your ceiling may contain asbestos, consult a professional for safe removal.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: How do I fill hole in ceiling after HWS removal?

Thank you so much Mitchell!

The masonite you see is actually the ceiling. The plate around the pipe was metal and had been removed.. What you see is the indentation from the plate, and probably layers of paint

So....just before I covered up the hole with plywood...but secured it with industrial adhesive. It has stuck really well. I just went around it with abit of filler, and tomorrow I'm off to Bunnings to get some Spakfilla

I just hope I can get it smooth.

Thanks again
