How do I fill/glue and sand front door so I can paint it

Hoping to paint my hollow veneered front and back doors instead of having to replace. Both have veneer peeling away at the bottom (see pic). Is there a way to glue/fill then sand veneer to get a nice smooth finish?
Thanks for any tips.

Re: How do I fill/glue and sand front door so I can paint it

Hello @Schnauzersociet

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about your front door.

I propose removing your door and laying it down on a pair of sawhorses. This type of damage often happens when the bottom of the door is not properly painted or sealed. Water enters through the unprotected section of the door and begins to damage it. It's good that you are taking action, if left unrepaired the damage to the veneer will grow even bigger. Once the door is on its side, I propose using Gorilla 236ml Wood Glue on the bottom of the veneer and any other section that might be lifting up.

Push the veneer to the surface of the door and wipe away any excess adhesive. Place a piece of MDF offcut on the surface of the damaged section and clamp it tight with a Craftright 300mm 2 Piece Quick Action Clamp. Allow the glue to cure for one hour and then remove the clamp and panels. If the MDF is stuck just tap it with a hammer to remove it. If fibres of MDF are left on the surface it can be sanded away. The floating pieces of veneer should now be firmly stuck back to the surface of the door.

You can now sand the surface of your door and prepare it for painting. Please make sure to sand the bottom and top of the door to make sure these sections are painted as well. For an extra layer of protection, I recommend putting a thin coat of Parfix 500g Ready To Use Multipurpose Filler on the top and bottom of the door. I also suggest putting some on the repaired veneer section of the door. When the filler cures sand it down to level then prepare the door for painting.

Here is a handy step-by-step guide: How to Paint a Front Door.
