I have a wind out window that closes most of the way, but then just continues winding without fully shutting.
How might a go about fixing this?
Hi @EllieBee,
Thank you for your question and welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
It sounds like the window winder mechanism, likely the gearbox, is worn or damaged, allowing the handle to keep turning without fully closing the window.
To troubleshoot, first inspect the winder mechanism and ensure there are no visible obstructions to the chain. Open the window fully and check for debris around the chain.
Also, check that the window is not rubbing against the sill, which could create resistance and prevent it from closing completely. If you notice rubbing, the window frame or hinges may need adjustment to allow the winder to operate smoothly.
Next, examine the gearbox inside the winder casing. Remove the cover by unscrewing it, then turn the handle gently to see if the gears are slipping or appear stripped. This can indicate damage to the internal mechanism. Check for debris that could cause the chain to jam and clean with WD-40.
If you find worn or damaged gears, replacing the entire winder unit is usually the best solution, as winders are often sold as complete units. This Remsafe Stainless Steel Black Window Winder is likely a good option, however it is quite wide compared to yours so this needs to be considered.
