Grid connect switch not picking up local wifi IP

Grid connect switch not picking up local wifi IP

I have a Deta inline switch. I use my phone to pair with the device, but instead of picking up a local wifi IP address, it picks up my external IP address. As the device is behind the modem and router it means I cannot connect to it via wifi.

i have many Deta devices. When i paired them they pick up a local wifi address, like 192.168.0.xxx. With this device it picks up the IP address that I login to when I am away from home.

How can I fix this or is the device faulty? AS I said, I have 8 other deta grid connect devices and none have done this before.

Re: Grid connect switch not picking up local wifi IP

Hi @lachlan-peter,

Thank you for your question about your Deta inline switch.

Unfortunately, I am no expert on the Grid Connect system and I can't say I'm sure how to address this issue.

Your question is likely best addressed to the Grid Connect Customer Service team who can be contacted on 1300 267 168 in Australia and 0800 003 329 in New Zealand.

Also, allow me to tag @CSParnell to see if he can help.

Re: Grid connect switch not picking up local wifi IP

@lachlan-peter are you trying to pair it via EZ or AP mode?

Here are some other options I have found.

It appears that your Grid Connect switch is obtaining an external IP address instead of a local one during the pairing process. This issue may stem from several factors related to your network configuration. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

1. Ensure IPv4 is Enabled on Your Router: Grid Connect devices require a local IPv4 address for proper operation. Verify that your router is configured to use IPv4 addresses, as IPv6 can cause connectivity issues with these devices.

2. Connect to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Network: Many smart devices, including Grid Connect products, operate exclusively on the 2.4 GHz frequency band. Ensure that your mobile device and the Grid Connect switch are connected to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network during the pairing process.

3. Disable Band Steering on Dual-Band Routers: If your router broadcasts both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks under the same SSID, it may cause pairing issues. Disabling band steering can help:

Access your router's settings (commonly via http://192.168.0.1).

Navigate to the Wi-Fi settings and select the 2.4 GHz band.

Disable the band steering option and save the changes.

Reconnect your mobile device to the 2.4 GHz network and attempt the pairing process again.

Find the MAC address of your Grid Connect switch (this is usually printed on the device or available in its settings).

Access your router's DHCP settings and create a reservation for the switch using its MAC address, assigning it a specific IP address within your local network range (e.g., 192.168.0.x).

Save the settings and reboot both your router and the Grid Connect switch.

5. Check for Router-Specific Issues: Some routers, like the Telstra Smart Modem, have default configurations that may interfere with device pairing:

Activate the Guest Network: Enable a 2.4 GHz guest network and connect your mobile device and the Grid Connect switch to this network during pairing.

Turn Off Band Steering: As mentioned earlier, disabling band steering can help in distinguishing between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.

6. Update Firmware and App: Ensure that both the Grid Connect app and the firmware of your switch are up to date. Manufacturers often release updates that address connectivity issues.

7. Reset the Grid Connect Switch: Perform a factory reset on the switch to clear any previous configurations that might be causing conflicts. Refer to the user manual for specific reset instructions.

8. Consult Customer Support: If the issue persists after trying the above steps, it would be advisable to contact Grid Connect customer support for further assistance.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the IP address conflict and successfully pair

your Grid Connect switch to your local network.
