Hi DIYers,
I have decided to replace our home’s existing coach lights and was wondering if I could do it myself. Please see attached images for the existing ones and new ones I got from Bunnings.
thanks
Hello @sper
It's great to see that you've got some new coach lights for your house. In this instance, I suggest engaging the services of a registered electrician. You can do the drilling and the mounting part of the installation, but it's best to leave the electrical reconnection to the professionals. In this manner, you can be sure that the connection was done properly and is covered with a warranty.
Just a friendly reminder, please don't disconnect any of the electrical cables while you are measuring the new mounting points for your coach lights.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Hi @EricL,
Good call there, especially with outdoor light fittings.
The electrician would need to do a polarity test and if the lighting is on an RCD (which is common these days), it needs to be tested as well and
certified/documented as safe.
Cheers,
Mike T.
Fantastic advise by @EricL and @MikeTNZ, as a licenced electrical myself I would advise carrying out any of the work yourself you are not going to save any money at all by unscrewing the fitting off the wall and drilling new holes the only thing this will achieve is put the thought in the Electricians mind of what dodgy DIY stuff has been done around the premises.
If it's above 50V AC it means a licensed electrician fir the reasons of safety to you and your family or anyone else and also your insurance because if the place burns down and they trace it back to that DIY fitting expect your insurance to be cancelled and your sleeping on a couch at a mates.
Hi @CSParnell,
And to be fair, from an electricians point of view, it will take you about 30-45 minutes to do a job like this.
At least when it's finished it is tested and safe.
And the customer knows that it is safe to be used.
Cheers,
Mike T.
