Bare timber stairs or carpet?

Just wondering what people's preference is, considering aspects like looks, safety and noise: carpet the stairs or have plain timber?

Or perhaps a compromise - timber with a runner?

Timber - they look beautiful and are much more durable. I also find them safer.
