Here are 10 ways to create a low-maintenance laundry in your home.

1. Choose durable flooring

Hybrid vinyl or tile flooring is durable, water-resistant and easy to clean, making it ideal for a laundry room.

Bunnings Workshop community member @DIYMum replaced her aged tiled flooring with vinyl in her laundry renovation with timber bench and tiling.

Here’s a helpful guide How to choose the right type of flooring from the Bunnings team.

2. Install a utility sink

A utility sink makes it easier to handle tough stains and hand-wash delicate items without using your washing machine.

Experienced member @Nham made great use of a utility sink in his narrow laundry renovation.

3. Use stain-resistant countertops

Select countertops made from materials like stone or laminate that are easy to wipe clean and resist stains.

A budget laundry renovation looks fresh thanks to the choice of laminate benchtop by experienced renovator Jess (@prettyliving).

4. Invest in ample storage

Install cabinets and shelves to keep laundry essentials organised and out of sight. Use baskets or bins for sorting and storing smaller items.

Community member @Nkbarfield shared a space-saving drying and laundry storage solution, and the Bunnings team has created a guide How to create an industrial-look hanging clothes rail.

5. Select low-maintenance appliances

Choose washing machines and dryers with self-cleaning cycles and easy-access lint traps to reduce maintenance tasks.

For units without a self-cleaning function, check out the helpful Bunnings guide How to clean a washing machine.

6. Hang a drying rack

A retractable, built-in or foldable drying rack saves space and provides a convenient spot for air-drying clothes without the hassle of setting up a clothesline.

Here’s a simple guide How to make a foldable drying rack.

7. Include a built-in ironing board

A built-in ironing board that folds away when not in use saves space and eliminates the need to set up and put away a traditional ironing board.

The Bunnings team has created a step-by-step guide How to install an ironing centre.

8. Utilise easy-clean wall finishes

Paint or tile walls with finishes that are easy to wipe down and resist moisture and detergent splashes.

Workshop community member @RenoRach1 shared a Queenslander laundry transformation with tiled splashback and experienced member @ProjectPete created a helpful guide How tile a splashback.

9. Label storage containers

Use clear containers labelled for different types of laundry supplies such as detergent pods and stain removers. It helps to keep everything organised and easily accessible.

Ezystorage has a huge range of container storage solutions for your laundry.

10. Enhance lighting

Good lighting is essential for spotting stains and ensuring thorough cleaning. Install task lighting over work areas and consider adding ambient lighting for a well-lit, inviting space.

Bunnings Workshop member @theDIYedit's laundry reno with Kaboodle cabinets and benchtop was enhanced with the addition of under-cabinet lighting.
