painting stencils onto concrete sleeper retaining wall

I have a pretty 'blah' concrete sleeper retaining wail. Hoping to paint a few stencil shapes of animals to liven it up. Not huge - A4 Size Max. What prep and paint should I use.

Hi @chilejen

I might use some spray  paint will  work  well just as long as the egdes are flat to the surface for crisper images.

2nd  choice is a little roller and tray but using  acrylic paint. but  iam not keen on the  roller clean ups.

Watch some you tube and have fun.

Re: painting stencils onto concrete sleeper retaining wall

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @chilejen. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about painting a retaining wall.

Before starting your project, it’s worth considering if there’s any moisture transfer through to the front face of the retaining wall after it rains. If water weeps through from behind due to a lack of waterproofing at the rear, it might cause the paint to peel or be pushed off over time due to water pressure. This could make the wall a challenging surface to work with for painting.

If the wall stays dry and you’re set on the project, start by thoroughly cleaning the surface to remove any dirt, moss, or residue. Then, apply a masonry primer to ensure good adhesion. Follow this with a high-quality exterior-grade paint like Dulux Weathershield for durability and weather resistance. Use stencils and secure them tightly to avoid smudging, applying the paint in light, even layers.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: painting stencils onto concrete sleeper retaining wall

Thanks for the advice. I've not witnessed any dampness coming through concrete slabs but rain water certainly hits it.

Good food for thought. Thanks very much.
